The literary era since 1979

Chapter 666: Untouchable

Compared with the previous version by Steven Spielberg, Kubrick’s “Artificial Intelligence”, apart from the obvious difference in special effects, the difference is that Steven Spielberg’s version is a cyberpunk-style “Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales”.

Kubrick’s, on the other hand, is a dark, adult version of Grimm’s fairy tales set in a science fiction context, such as Snow White dancing in red-hot iron shoes.

What is a fairy tale?
Fairy tales are for children!
Fortunately, whether it is a novel or a script written in dialect, it still retains the fairy tale background full of love and warmth.

So even though Kubrick’s “Artificial Intelligence” looks cold and cruel, it is actually filled with warmth everywhere.

As a result, once this movie suitable for all ages was released, it sold more than 1240 million US dollars in the first weekend in North America alone.

Overseas markets outside the United States also raked in nearly 1800 million, directly topping the Hollywood summer box office champion for that week.

Many media outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Us Weekly, and the Chicago Tribune, began to publicize the event.

Lin Qingxia lazily lay on the sofa, reading all the news reports about dialects and the movie “Artificial Intelligence”.

In the newspapers, you can see endless, lengthy, and even enthusiastic articles praising the reviews.

The Detroit Free Press called it “Artificial Intelligence the most fearless Hollywood movie since Apocalypse Now.”

The Los Angeles Times said, “Artificial Intelligence is about making us understand these future artificial intelligences better. The technology and the times in the film far outweigh the story itself, but Kubrick and Fang cleverly use love to run through the main line and finally achieve a fairy-tale ending.”

There are even some like The New York Times, which commented on the novel “Artificial Intelligence” which has re-entered the New York Times bestseller list:
“Artificial Intelligence deserves a Nebula Award! It deserves a Hugo Award!”

“Sister Qingxia, look at this!”

Fang Yan excitedly handed over a newspaper.

Lin Qingxia took a look at it and saw that it clearly said, “Kubrick said in an interview with this newspaper that he originally wanted to make “Artificial Intelligence” into a cold adult fable. Most of the crew were very excited, but only Fang, the original author and screenwriter of this film, strongly opposed it. After a heated discussion, Fang finally convinced her to change it into a warm fairy tale.”

“When the false civilization of mankind has disappeared, when both cold-blooded and kind-hearted humans have become extinct, the answer to human civilization that alien life wants to explore lies in the heart of a little robot boy. Love, this answer may be tacky, but it has become the most direct connection between humans and artificial intelligence… Therefore, “Artificial Intelligence” is by no means a Kubrick-style movie in the traditional sense!”

“This is so well written, especially mentioning my brother’s contribution!”

Fang Yan said excitedly, “I’m going to show it to him.”

“Slow down.”

Lin Qingxia stopped him, “Look, you’re in a hurry again. Your brother should be busy creating now. Don’t disturb him.”

Fang Yan followed her gaze and saw that the door of the study was closed. She could faintly hear the sound of light keyboard tapping.

“Crackling.”

“Crackling.”

Fangyan paused and slowly breathed a sigh of relief.

His eyes then fell on the running printer, and sheets of manuscript paper with the content of “The Matrix” were “spitted out”.

Fangyan quickly shifted his attention to a piece of paper with scribblings on it. The words on the paper had been smudged and deleted by himself and were completely unrecognizable.

The few that I can recognize are only “Forrest Gump”, “Good Will Hunting”, “Dances with Wolves”, “Legends of the Ancient Sword”…

These are the films that the dialects think are suitable for Francis Coppola, especially the ones that have been circled by themselves.

For example, “Scent of a Woman”.

But after a while of thought, I found that the most suitable one was “The Intouchables” which I directed Shi Tiesheng to write.

The only difference from the original movie is that the protagonists of the French version are a wealthy man who was paralyzed due to an accident, and a poor young man who had just been released from prison to apply for the “nanny job” to take care of the rich man. There is a huge difference in their identities, and Shi Tiesheng’s version is based on them as the prototypes of the characters.

There are some stories in which Fang Yan takes Shi Tiesheng to participate in a football match and treats Shi Tiesheng as a “goal”, and there are also stories in which Fang Yan carries Shi Tiesheng on his back and climbs onto a train…

In short, whether it is the Shi Tiesheng version or the French original, an incredible and wonderful friendship is intertwined between the two protagonists.

Moreover, if “The Intouchables” can really be adapted, the royalties from the novel and the adaptation fees will be enough to support Shi Tiesheng’s life and medical treatment.

The more he thought about it, the more Fang Yan felt that “The Intouchables” was a thousand times more pleasing to the eye than “The Shawshank Redemption” and the like.

At this moment, the ringing of the phone interrupted my thoughts.

As soon as Fangyan got through, Jason Epstein on the other end of the phone said bluntly that Forbes TV wanted to do an exclusive interview with him.

“Interview about what?”

“Of course it’s related to the movie ‘Artificial Intelligence’. This is a great opportunity, don’t miss it.”

“Then let’s set it for next Tuesday. I’ll accept the interview after the Nebula Awards ceremony.”

“good idea!”

Jason Epstein smiled. If “The Three-Body Problem: The Dark Forest” finally won the Nebula Award, he could take advantage of the opportunity of the exclusive interview with Forbes TV to promote the “The Three-Body Problem” series of novels. This would be more effective than the promotion of a dozen media newspapers.

“Anything else?”

Fangyan knocked on the table.

“About your new work, The Matrix…”

Jason Epstein means business.

“I have almost finished revising the manuscript. I will give it to you on the day of the Nebula Awards ceremony.”

Fang Yan said: “But this is the Chinese version. If you want to read it, you must translate it into English first.”

“No problem! That’s absolutely no problem!”

Jason Epstein was delighted.

Fangyan’s mouth curled up slightly. He had originally planned to let the translator from Science Fiction World Publishing House do this, but when he thought that the translator from Random House was more professional and it was free labor, he simply handed it over to Random House. After all, if you can get a good deal, you’d be a fool not to take advantage of it.

“I look forward to the day when the Nebula Awards will be presented!”

Jason Epstein’s tone was somewhat excited.

Then, the two sides chatted for a while about the royalties for “The Matrix” until they reached an agreement and then hung up the phone.

Fangyan bound several printed copies of “The Matrix” manuscript into a book, and suddenly there was a knock on the door.

“Please come in.”

“Brother!”

Fang Yan pushed the door open and walked out in a hurry.

“I’m so reckless, so what?”

Fangyan shook his head and laughed.

“Hey, brother, you’ve been busy for so long, isn’t it time to take a break?”

“Oh, the sun is rising from the west. I’m starting to feel sorry for your brother.”

“Why does the sun rise from the west? I always feel sorry for you, brother!”

Fang Yan said frankly that since it was not easy to come to the United States, she should take her sister out for some fun.

Fangyan thought about it carefully and felt a little guilty for neglecting his younger sister these days.

“Then tell me, where do you want to go?”

“How about we go to the beach and soak up some sun?”

Seeing the little sister’s eyes full of anticipation, Fangyan smiled and agreed.

But unexpectedly, as soon as the words came out, Fang Yan rushed out and shouted:

“Sister Qingxia, my brother has agreed. When are we going to go buy swimsuits?”………………

The next day, under the clear blue sky, parasols stood on the golden beach, and men and women lay under them, talking and laughing.

What foreigners love most is to enjoy sunbathing on the beach. Once upon a time, sunbathing was even the exclusive privilege of European aristocrats, because only the leisurely and wealthy people had time to enjoy the baptism of sunshine, while ordinary citizens and the working class were busy with work and had no time to spare.

Moreover, many people want to tan their skin into a bronze or wheat color.

Because they feel that this skin color can better highlight muscles and body lines, making them look healthier, more confident and beautiful.

In order to pursue this skin color, some people even resort to “technology and hard work” to make their skin darker. This is the so-called “tanning”.

But Lin Qingxia never had such an idea, and she strolled along the Rizhao coastline with the Fangyan brother and sister.

Facing the sea breeze and stepping on the silky sand, it was as if nature had spread a soft carpet for them.

Fang Yan glanced casually and saw that she was wearing a black tube top swimsuit, which showed off her perfect body shape and fair and smooth skin.

Under the sunlight, it is full of tension and incredibly beautiful.

“Brother, please take a picture of me and Sister Qingxia!”

Fang Yan handed over the Polaroid camera.

“Okay, where do you want to shoot?”

Fangyan asked casually.

“In the sea, of course!”

As soon as Fang Yan finished speaking, she pulled Lin Qingxia and ran to the beach.

The cold sea water flooded over Lin Qingxia’s ankles. She raised her hand to straighten her straw hat that was swaying in the wind, with a faint smile on her lips.

“Don’t move. Three, two, one…”

Fangyan pressed the shutter button, and then a photo came out of the Polaroid camera. He then took it out and shook it gently a few times.

“Brother, don’t worry, there’s more!”

A cunning look flashed in Fang Yan’s eyes.

Before Lin Qingxia could react, a stream of sea water splashed towards her, chilling her from head to toe.

“Good you swallow!”

“Hehe, Sister Qingxia, when we get to the beach, we have to play in the water!”

Fang Yan grinned, and she and Lin Qingxia splashed water on each other in the shallow water, laughing and playing.

In an instant, the hearty laughter spread throughout the entire beach, attracting many people lying down to bask in the sun.

“Kakakaka.”

Fangyan naturally took pictures of them non-stop, occasionally directing the two of them to make various gestures and postures.

“Change, brother, let me take the photo for you guys!”

The little sister, who was soaked all over, dodged the water splashed by Lin Qingxia and ran back in a panic as if she was defeated.

“Look at you, you should wipe it first.”

Fangyan picked up the towel hanging around his neck and wiped the water droplets off her face.

“Brother, I’ll do it myself.” Fang Yan took the Polaroid camera and towel, “Go over quickly, don’t keep Sister Qingxia waiting for too long.”

“You!”

Fang Yan shook his head helplessly, then walked straight towards Lin Qingxia who was standing in the water.

I saw that she was soaked all over after the play just now, and water droplets were dripping down her smooth skin, making her look particularly crystal clear.

Their eyes met, but they quickly and intentionally looked away.

Fang Yan held up the Polaroid camera, “Brother, Sister Qingxia, here! Here! Look at the camera!”

Lin Qingxia and Fang Yan stood very unnaturally and awkwardly, as if there was an invisible wall separating them. They were out of reach of each other. Even though the waves gently lapped their feet and legs, they still couldn’t “beat” them together.

“Three, two, hey!”

Fang Yan was just about to take a photo, but she didn’t expect that the sea surface, which was originally calm in the camera, suddenly surged violently.

Immediately afterwards, a huge wave hit the shore and attacked Fang Yan, Lin Qingxia and others who were standing in the shallow water.

Lin Qingxia staggered, and finally her back seemed to be kicked with great force, and she lost her balance and fell forward.

Fangyan was quick to act and grabbed her waist. Just as he was about to steady her, he didn’t expect the huge wave to sweep them both in.

“Brother! Sister Qingxia!”

Fang Yan’s heart skipped a beat and she ran forward hurriedly.

Fortunately, although the wave was big, it was not dangerous. It just soaked Fang Yan and Lin Qingxia from head to toe.

At this moment, the sea water flooded over their waists. They hugged each other tightly, and the straw hats they were wearing had drifted away.

Lin Qingxia felt his warm breath on her face and suddenly became flustered, especially when she noticed Fang Yan running towards her out of the corner of her eye.

“Are you guys okay?”

“No…it’s okay.”

“That’s good, that’s good. I was really scared to death just now.”

“The waves are big right now, so we won’t take pictures for now.”

Seeing that the younger sister was relieved, Fangyan took them back to the parasol he had built.

Lin Qingxia wiped the water droplets without saying a word.

Fangyan gave his younger sister money to buy a few bottles of drinks, and then when they were alone, he said meaningfully: “Just now…”

Lin Qingxia’s mind flashed back to the charming scene in the water just now, and she shyly replied: “Thank you so much for what you did just now.”

Fangyan opened his mouth and was about to say something when he heard a cry of “Wow” beside him.

Among the passers-by passing by them, some recognized Fangyan’s true identity and came up to him on a whim to ask for his autograph.

“Fang, I’m a fan of Li’s books! The Three-Body Problem you wrote is so cool!”

“Our whole family watched the movie Artificial Intelligence that was released some time ago. My children really like this story!”

“………”

As soon as Fangyan was recognized, it immediately caused quite a commotion, and more and more people gathered around.

Some of them who were wearing clothes asked Fangyan to sign their names directly, while those who were only wearing swimsuits were even more open and asked him to sign their names.

Lin Qingxia, who was being pushed further and further to the periphery, felt very uncomfortable at the moment.

Especially when I see passionate and bold women who are so unrestrained as to let Fangyan sign their names on their chests, I feel a hint of resentment in my anger.

The sea breeze blew gently, and the air seemed to be filled with a sour smell. (End of this chapter)
