Chapter 123 Pursuit of the Deserter
The number of grenades dwindled rapidly during the fierce battle, with the continuous sound of gunfire filling the air.
Taking advantage of a brief lull in the exchange of fire between the enemy and our forces, He Yuzhu ducked down into a blind spot in the trench and quickly reached into his personal storage space to search.
When he was clearing out the Japanese in the Tianjin area, he seized and disposed of a large number of enemy weapons and equipment, with all kinds of firearms and ammunition piled up to the brim.
I just haven't had time to organize it properly, and I'm not sure if I can find any spare grenades.
When He Yuzhu's fingertips touched the cold wooden crate's edge, he was delighted. Looking down, he found two boxes of dusty grenades in the corner of the space, where supplies had been stored for the earliest time.
These two boxes had always been piled up with the MG42 general-purpose machine gun. He had never noticed them before and thought they contained firearms and ammunition from the same country. He never expected that they contained urgently needed grenades.
After confirming that no one was watching his movements, He Yuzhu quickly took out grenades from the box, filled two military ammunition bags, slung them over his shoulder, and immediately returned to his fighting position to continue his crucial task of clearing enemy firing points and covering his comrades' advance.
Night gradually swallowed the sky, and the already dim sky became completely dark. After successfully repelling the enemy's frenzied attack once again, the front line was at peace.
The soldiers on the position checked their ammunition and found that they were running out of bullets again, with only a few rounds left in their guns and their magazines empty.
According to past combat patterns, after the enemy's offensive is thwarted, they will inevitably use artillery fire to carry out a comprehensive attack.
This time, however, the area around the position was unusually quiet, and the enemy's artillery fire did not roar for a long time.
Company Commander Liang Jian frowned, his fingertips gripping the soil at the edge of the trench, a strong sense of unease rising within him:
"Something's not right, something's really not right. Those Japanese... no, those South Koreans, they're definitely up to something."
He dared not be careless, and immediately lowered his voice to instruct the soldiers around him:
"Find a few quick-witted guys to sneak out under cover of darkness and risk retrieving the ammunition pouches next to the enemy corpses, quick!"
The soldiers obeyed the order and, under the cover of night, crouched low and crawled forward quickly, carefully collecting the ammunition left behind by the enemy.
The second platoon leader lowered his body and quickly scrambled to Liang Jian's side, his voice filled with urgency:
"Company commander, something's wrong! The enemy is trying to escape! Listen, the gunfire around us is getting weaker!"
Liang Jian listened carefully and, sure enough, not only had the enemy's firepower in front of him thinned out considerably, but the gunfire from the 2nd Company's position on the flank was also becoming increasingly sparse, completely lacking the momentum of their previous fierce attack.
His face darkened, and he replied in a deep voice, "Judging from this, they're most likely planning to escape under the cover of night!"
"So what do we do, Company Commander? Should we attack immediately and stop them?"
The second platoon leader gripped his gun tightly, his eyes filled with urgency.
"No!"
Liang Jian shook his head decisively, his face full of worry. The painful lessons of the previous battles were still fresh in his mind. The company was already short of troops. If they launched an attack rashly, they would easily fall into the enemy's ambush, and the entire company might be wiped out.
He took a deep breath and solemnly instructed, "We are outnumbered. A rash attack would be suicide. We must remain still and observe the situation! Go and relay the order immediately, making all soldiers ready for battle and awaiting the order to attack. Remember, do not act rashly!"
"Yes!" the second platoon leader responded, immediately bowing and quickly heading to each squad to relay the orders.
At this moment, He Yuzhu was squatting in the trench, focused on loading bullets onto the bridge. The bullets he had loaded in advance had already been used up in the battle. His fingers were red from being rubbed by the cold bullet casings, but he did not stop at all.
Zheng Shuanzi, clutching his gun, quickly crawled to his side and spoke in a low voice:
"Zhu Zi, do you have any grenades left? The enemy's strongpoints are stubborn right now, grenades could be very useful!"
He Yuzhu continued working with his hands without looking up, replying, "Eight shots left, you can have them all."
As he spoke, he took off the grenade pouch from his back and handed it directly to Zheng Shuanzi.
Zheng Shuanzi took the bag and subconsciously asked, "You're not going to use it? Aren't you going to use grenades for cover in the upcoming battle?"
He Yuzhu raised his hand and patted the sniper rifle beside him. The gun was cold, but it exuded confidence.
"This thing is really useful for fighting at night. It's very accurate. You'd be better suited to use it for grenades."
"Alright, then I won't stand on ceremony!" Zheng Shuanzi hung the grenade pouch firmly on his body, and out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a lot of bullets piled up next to He Yuzhu, and couldn't help but wonder.
"By the way, how come you still have so many bullets? Our ammunition is almost gone."
He Yuzhu pointed to the enemy's ammunition pouches hidden beside him, concealed by rubble, and said calmly:
"I took advantage of a lull in the fighting to loot a few enemy corpses and collect some loot."
Upon hearing this, Zheng Shuanzi quickly reminded him, "Then be careful. Did you receive the orders the company commander just gave?"
"Received. The second platoon leader just came over and specifically told me to be ready to attack at any time," He Yuzhu nodded in response.
Zheng Shuanzi frowned and looked at him: "So what's your view on the current situation?"
"It's obvious that the enemy can't hold out any longer and wants to escape tonight," He Yuzhu said after loading a magazine of bullets, pausing for a moment.
"I'll go and remind the other comrades in the squad again. If the order to attack is really given, don't rush in too recklessly. Our squad has limited manpower, so don't get separated from the group, otherwise we won't be able to keep up with the support."
He Yuzhu smiled and replied, "Understood, my dear class monitor."
"Stop grinning like that!" Zheng Shuanzi glared at him and gave him a serious warning.
"Don't forget you're also the deputy squad leader. You can't just rush forward yourself; you have to look after your comrades in the squad, understand?"
"Okay, I've got it." He Yuzhu nodded seriously.
Zheng Shuanzi was relieved and turned to convey his instructions to the other soldiers in his platoon.
He Yuzhu lowered his head again and continued to focus on loading bullets. As night deepened, the temperature in the mountains plummeted, and the cold wind howled across the battlefield, cutting like a knife on the face. Before long, snowflakes began to fall from the sky, melting instantly into icy water on the shoulders.
Just then, an unusually heavy engine roar came from the direction of the highway, carried by the cold wind.
This sound was different from the previous car or armored vehicle roars; it was deep and heavy, carrying an extremely strong sense of oppression.
He Yuzhu instantly became alert, immediately stopped what he was doing, quickly put away the remaining bullets, and looked up towards the road.
"Tanks! Enemy tanks!"
Before He Yuzhu could even speak, the soldiers not far away had already seen the scene on the highway and couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
On the dark highway, two enemy tanks were slowly driving toward the position, the sound of their tracks crushing the road surface was particularly clear in the silent night.
"All personnel, prepare for battle! Quickly!" Company Commander Liang Jian shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice filled with seriousness.
Throughout the entire day, the enemy only deployed armored vehicles to the battlefield. However, these vehicles had excessively high chassis and could not be driven up the hillside. They could only rely on their vehicle-mounted machine guns to suppress the positions on the hill, posing no fatal threat whatsoever.
Moreover, in the previous battle, He Yuzhu had already accurately killed several groups of machine gunners on armored vehicles and blew out the tires of the two leading armored vehicles, turning those armored vehicles into fixed mobile cover. Enemy soldiers could only hide under and behind the armored vehicles and dared not show their faces easily.
But now, the enemy has actually brought in tanks, and the situation has suddenly become extremely dangerous!
To everyone's surprise, the two tanks did not charge directly towards the mountain position, but instead pushed the disabled armored vehicle to the side of the road to clear the way.
Immediately afterwards, the searchlights on the tank roof turned on instantly, and two blinding beams of light shone directly onto the hilltop, illuminating the entire position as if it were daytime. Every bunker and every soldier on the position was exposed to the light without any cover.
"Da da da! Da da da!"
Before the soldiers could react, the heavy machine guns on both tanks opened fire simultaneously, and dense bullets rained down on the mountain, hitting rocks and trenches and splashing up countless stones and dirt.
Immediately afterwards, a company of South Korean soldiers rushed out from the road. Using tanks and wrecked armored vehicles as cover, they set up their weapons and fired wildly at the positions on the mountain.
In an instant, the sounds of various gunshots, bullets whistling through the air, and artillery shells roaring mingled together, echoing throughout the entire valley.
"Da da da!"
"Bang! Bang! Bang!"
"Rat-a-tat-tat!"
The enemy's firepower was extremely concentrated, forming an impenetrable fire net that pinned down the soldiers on the mountain, forcing them to lie tightly in their trenches, unable to retaliate.
He Yuzhu reacted extremely quickly. The moment the searchlight came on, he immediately lowered his body and retreated rapidly to the side of the mountain. Relying on his familiarity with the terrain, he quickly found a concealed firing position where he could return fire. This position was perfect for avoiding the enemy's frontal fire while still being able to aim at the tanks and enemy soldiers.
He quickly set up his sniper rifle, steadily aimed at the searchlight of one of the tanks, held his breath, and gently pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
A sharp gunshot rang out, the blinding searchlight shattered instantly, the light went out, and the highway was plunged into darkness.
Without pausing, He Yuzhu quickly pulled back the bolt, turned the muzzle, aimed at the searchlight of another tank, and pulled the trigger again.
"Bang!"
The second searchlight also went out.
After eliminating the searchlight, He Yuzhu's sharp eyes were searching for the next key target through the scope, intending to kill the gunner on the tank. Suddenly, he felt a strong sense of danger approaching. Through the scope, he saw that the turret of one of the tanks was slowly rotating, and the muzzle of the gun was pointed directly at his position!
"Holy crap!"
He Yuzhu couldn't help but swear. Without hesitation, he immediately picked up his sniper rifle and slid down the hillside as fast as a cheetah.
"Whoosh—Boom!"
Almost the instant he left his hiding place, a shell whistled through the air and landed precisely where he had just been lying. A violent explosion rang out, and rubble and sand exploded everywhere. He Yuzhu felt a strong gust of wind sweep over his head, and his face and body were covered with falling rocks and sand, making him cough uncontrollably.
He steadied himself and looked up at the spot where he had just been. The bunker had been completely destroyed by artillery fire; mud was churned up and rocks were shattered. He cursed inwardly.
"Those damn Koreans, the gunner on that tank is really something, his reaction time is quick!"
The soldiers on the hilltop were not to be outdone and began to fight back. It was never the style of the company to just take a beating without fighting back!
The soldiers set up grenade launchers and launched a counterattack against the enemy positions below the mountain. In mountain warfare, grenade launchers can fire from high to low, which has a longer range and does not require the soldiers to expose their heads, thus minimizing casualties.
Just as the two rounds of grenade launcher shells were fired, the enemy's tank guns below the mountain, along with the 60mm mortars that had been secretly brought up at some unknown time, immediately launched three rounds of indiscriminate bombardment on the mountain positions. The trenches were blown into place, and many soldiers were buried in the dust, but fortunately they were rescued by their comrades in time.
Upon seeing this, Liang Jian immediately gave the order:
"Cease fire with the grenade launchers! Conserve ammunition for the enemy's attack. Firing now is a waste and will only reveal our position!"
Upon hearing the sound, the soldiers immediately stopped firing their grenade launchers and continued to take cover in the trenches.
After this battle, He Yuzhu became more cautious. After that, he would immediately change his shooting position after each shot and would never fire a second shot from the same spot.
He knew that in such a high-intensity sniper battle, firing a second shot from the same spot would immediately attract concentrated fire from the enemy or result in a precise artillery strike, leaving no chance of escape.
As time went by, the enemy forces below the mountain increased in number. Before long, He Yuzhu heard the roar of trucks coming from the highway. Even though the gunfire was deafening, the sound of truck engines could still be clearly heard, which showed how many enemy vehicles were approaching.
He Yuzhu looked down the hillside toward the distant road, and the sight before him made him shudder.
On the highway, a dense array of headlights stretched as far as the eye could see. He could make out at least thirty or forty trucks, with more and more vehicles following behind. Further away, he could hear muffled booming sounds of artillery. These sounds could not be produced by tank cannons or 60mm mortars; judging from the sound, they were from howitzers of at least 105mm or larger!
He Yuzhu understood immediately and couldn't help but sigh softly, "South Korea's bald eagle father really spares no expense for his son, sending him heavy artillery, tanks, trucks—all sorts of advanced equipment. How extravagant!"
He took out his binoculars, which he had covered with gauze beforehand to avoid glare and revealing his position, and looked at several friendly positions in the vicinity. He found that the situation was exactly the same as that of the first company.
All positions were illuminated by enemy lights, and the area below the mountain was heavily suppressed by tanks and armored vehicles. The enemy only carried out dense fire coverage from the foot of the mountain and did not launch a frontal assault.
Friendly forces were also fighting back fiercely, with some soldiers even firing at trucks on the road. However, as soon as they opened fire, they were immediately met with enemy artillery fire, resulting in significant casualties.
He Yuzhu frowned slightly, pondering to himself: The enemy clearly had tanks during the day, but they didn't deploy them to the battlefield until night, when they launched this kind of fire suppression. Obviously, the enemy wasn't in a hurry to attack, but rather in a hurry to escape!
They used heavy firepower to suppress our positions in order to cover the withdrawal of the main force and supplies!
Seeing the enemy vehicles constantly passing by on the highway, the soldiers on the position were extremely anxious.
"These guys are trying to escape again! Is our ambush mission going to fail again?"
"We can't just let them get away like that; it's too easy on those Koreans!"
The soldiers whispered amongst themselves, their eyes filled with resentment.
He Yuzhu also put away his gun, stopped firing blindly, quickly crossed the trench, found Company Commander Liang Jian, and spoke urgently:
"Company commander, when are we going to counterattack? If we wait any longer, the enemy will all escape!"
Liang Jian looked at the densely packed enemy vehicles on the highway, his face grave, and sighed helplessly.
"Counterattack? Our entire company is down to such a small number of men. Even if we counterattack, what good will it do? The disparity in troop strength is too great. We simply cannot stop the enemy's main force."
"But we can't just sit here and watch the enemy escape!"
He Yuzhu clenched his fists, his heart filled with anxiety.
Liang Jian looked at him, his eyes flickering slightly:
"You're a clever little devil, aren't you? Tell me about it."
He Yuzhu's eyes lit up, and he immediately revealed his plan:
"Company Commander, how about our squad goes around to the road ahead and sabotage it, or precisely shoot down a few of the lead trucks to block the road, preventing the enemy from retreating quickly and buying time for the main force!"
"Ugh!"
Liang Jian slapped his thigh hard, his face full of regret.
"If only we had brought landmines and explosives with us when we set off from the regiment, we could have blown up the road and let's see how they would have run away! Now that we don't have that kind of heavy equipment, it's too difficult to block the road."
He Yuzhu immediately countered, "Does our regiment still have landmines and explosives? Can we find a way to get some more?"
Liang Jian shook his head: "Distant water can't quench immediate thirst; there's simply no time to mobilize equipment. By the way, wasn't it perfectly fine for you to be concealed and firing from the mountain? Why did you have to risk coming down?"
"It's too bright on the mountain. Even if we hide, we're easily spotted by the enemy. Moreover, the enemy's barrage of fire is too dense. Staying on the mountain not only makes it impossible to effectively block the enemy, but also makes us vulnerable to artillery fire, resulting in too many casualties," He Yuzhu calmly analyzed.
Upon hearing this, Liang Jian lowered his head and pondered for a moment, without responding immediately.
Seeing this, He Yuzhu quickly asked, "Company Commander, do you agree to my plan?"
Liang Jian didn't answer directly. Instead, he shouted at the top of his lungs towards one side of the position, "Hu Sanxi! Hu Sanxi! Come here right now!"
Upon hearing the shout, platoon leader Hu Sanxi immediately scrambled over, stood at attention, and saluted: "Company Commander! You wanted to see me!"
"How many soldiers in your platoon are still capable of fighting?" Liang Jian asked in a deep voice.
Hu Sanxi paused for a moment, then asked, "Company Commander, are the supply troops included too?"
"Yes! As long as it allows me to fight with a gun, it counts!"
Hu Sanxi quickly counted the number of men in his mind and replied, "Reporting, Company Commander, there are eight men left!"
Liang Jian turned to He Yuzhu: "Zhu Zi, are eight people enough for you?"
"That's enough! That's more than enough!" He Yuzhu nodded repeatedly, then looked at Hu Sanxi and asked urgently, "Platoon leader, may I ask if any of these supply soldiers know how to drive a car?"
Upon hearing this, Hu Sanxi scratched his head and said, "I haven't actually asked about that. Wait a moment, I'll call someone over to ask."
After saying that, he shouted in the direction where the supply troops were hiding, "Niu Sanwa! Niu Sanwa! Come here quickly!"
Soon, a young soldier with a baby face ran over quickly. He looked to be about eighteen or nineteen years old, with clear eyes and a touch of naiveté. He stood at attention in front of Hu Sanxi and said, "Platoon Leader Hu, you were looking for me?"
"That's right!" Hu Sanxi nodded, then cut to the chase, "Tell me, how many of your comrades in the supply corps can drive a car?"
Upon hearing this, Niu Sanwa scratched his head somewhat embarrassedly and replied in a low voice, "Cars... only our squad leader and deputy squad leader know how to drive. The rest of us have only been in the army for a short time and haven't had a chance to learn how to drive yet."
"Where are those two people now?" Hu Sanxi asked hurriedly.
"During the previous organizational restructuring, they said that our first platoon had fewer staff reductions, so they reassigned the two of them to the third platoon," Niu Sanwa replied truthfully.
Hu Sanxi immediately ordered, "Go to the third platoon right now and call those two over. Tell them the company commander has an urgent mission and needs them. Hurry!"
"Okay!" Niu Sanwa responded, immediately crouching down and running quickly toward the third rank's position with great agility.
After Niu Sanwa had run far away, Hu Sanxi looked at He Yuzhu with a puzzled expression: "Zhuzi, what do you need someone who can drive a car for? We're fighting a war, not doing transportation."
He Yuzhu smiled and explained, "Platoon leader, after we block the road, the pursuit will be left to our brother units. We can't just stay on the mountain forever, can we? So many enemy vehicles have passed ahead. What if some escape? Shouldn't we drive after them? This is called prevention."
"No! Absolutely not!" Hu Sanxi immediately waved his hand, refusing with a serious expression.
"There are only eight of you. Trying to sabotage the road and stop the enemy is risky enough, and you dare to drive after them? You're courting death! Too impulsive!"
"Platoon leader, I'm just preparing in advance, just in case we need it," He Yuzhu said quietly, pursing his lips.
"I'm telling you, no wild thoughts, and no unauthorized actions! Your mission is to intercept the enemy convoy. Once the mission is complete, immediately retreat in hiding. Do not pursue them. This is an order!" Hu Sanxi said sternly, issuing the order.
"yes!"
He Yuzhu obediently agreed verbally, but secretly thought to himself: When the battle really starts, the situation will be chaotic, and no one will care about anyone else. Even if someone wants to stop me, they won't be able to.
Liang Jian overheard their conversation and turned to Hu Sanxi, solemnly instructing him:
"Hu Sanxi, you keep a close eye on this kid. He Yuzhu is a brave fighter, but he's prone to going berserk. If he dares to disobey orders and charge without permission, you'd better tie him up and bring him back to the front lines, you hear me!"
"Yes, sir! I guarantee I will complete the mission!" Hu Sanxi stood at attention and answered, his eyes fixed on He Yuzhu, afraid that he would act recklessly ahead of time.
Not long after, Niu Sanwa arrived with the squad leader and deputy squad leader of the supply troops.
Liang Jian immediately ordered that all the remaining supply troops from the first platoon be transferred to the third platoon to fully support the front-line battle.
Soon, He Yuzhu, Hu Sanxi, Zheng Shuanzi, along with two supply platoon leaders who could drive, and three other soldiers, a total of eight people, assembled.
Under Liang Jian's instructions, all eight men switched to the stable M1 rifles. He Yuzhu did not take out any extra reserve bullets from his storage space, but made sure that everyone's rifle magazine was full. He knew that if they ran out of ammunition, they could just take it from the enemy. The enemy was uniformly equipped with this type of firearm, so they would not have to worry about running out of bullets.
Under the cover of darkness and the vegetation on the hillside, the group carefully made their way towards the road along the mountain ridge.
Along the way, the group kept a low profile, avoiding the enemy's patrols, and advanced slowly and steadily, not daring to make the slightest sound.
Finally reaching the edge of the road, the group quickly hid behind the bushes and rocks by the roadside. Hu Sanxi and Zheng Shuanzi peeked out at the scene on the road and were instantly troubled. They looked at each other and saw the difficulty in each other's eyes.
On the highway, enemy trucks were seen moving at high speed, with only five or six meters between them. The headlights of each truck were so bright that they illuminated the surrounding area clearly. Moreover, each truck was equipped with light and heavy machine guns, making the defense very tight.
In this situation, let alone damaging the road or stopping vehicles, even slightly showing one's face would be discovered by the enemy, which would be no different from deliberately throwing one's life away, leaving no way to attack.
He Yuzhu peered out and observed for a moment, taking in the enemy convoy's route and firepower deployment. He instantly formed a plan in his mind. He turned to his comrades and said in a low voice, "All of you, retreat immediately and hide in safe positions. Do not show yourselves without my orders."
Upon hearing this, Hu Sanxi immediately frowned and grabbed his arm:
"Pillar, tell us all to step back and take cover. What are you planning to do? I'm telling you, don't you dare do anything reckless!"
"Platoon leader, don't worry, I know what I'm doing and won't do anything risky. You'll see my plan soon enough," He Yuzhu reassured him softly.
"No! I have to keep an eye on you. If you act on your own, how am I supposed to explain it to the company commander!" Hu Sanxi refused to let go.
Helpless, He Yuzhu could only continue to persuade him: "Platoon leader, I really promise I won't do anything reckless. I'm only 16 years old, I haven't lived enough yet, I won't joke around with my own life."
"Even so, it won't work. I promised the company commander I would keep a close eye on you!" Hu Sanxi said firmly.
"Platoon leader, even if you follow me, you won't be able to keep up with my speed. Not only will you not be able to keep an eye on me, but you'll also expose yourself and die for nothing. It's not worth it," He Yuzhu said earnestly.
Hu Sanxi was speechless for a moment, not knowing how to refute.
Zheng Shuanzi watched for a moment and couldn't help but say, "Platoon leader, why don't you let Zhu Zi try? He's a good shot and quick-witted. He must be confident to say that."
"But I don't even know what he's going to do, I have no confidence in him, how can I dare to let him take the risk!" Hu Sanxi said irritably.
"Zhu Zi, just explain the plan to us clearly so that the platoon leader has a clear understanding before he will dare to agree to your action," Zheng Shuanzi advised, turning his head.
Seeing this, He Yuzhu had no choice but to tell the truth: "I want to try blowing up the cab of the enemy truck with a grenade. As long as the driver is killed, the truck will stop and the convoy will be blocked."
No sooner had he finished speaking than a soldier in his thirties beside him immediately retorted, his tone remarkably firm:
"Comrade He Yuzhu, I think your idea is completely unworkable! The cab windows of these military trucks are thickened and extremely hard. We are still some distance from the road. At this distance, a grenade would not be able to break the glass at all, and we wouldn't even be able to get into the cab, let alone blow up the driver."
He Yuzhu turned to look at him, his eyes filled with doubt, clearly asking about the other person's identity.
The soldier quickly introduced himself:
"I'm Huang Ping, the squad leader of the supply platoon. I drive trucks and I know the structure of these trucks very well. Trust me, this method really won't work."
"I see." He Yuzhu nodded in understanding, then changed his words.
"Since grenades won't work, let's use guns. We originally wanted to use grenades to finish them off in one go, so that no one could open them after they exploded. Since that won't work, let's use guns."
Huang Ping remained unconvinced, frowning as he said, "With a truck traveling at such a high speed and the target swaying violently, how could you accurately hit the driver in the cab? It's too difficult, simply impossible."
Hu Sanxi, however, had complete confidence in He Yuzhu and quickly said, "Squad Leader Huang, you don't need to doubt Zhuzi's marksmanship. His marksmanship is one of the best in our company, hitting the bullseye every time! Zhuzi, if you're going to use a gun, you don't need to get so close. You can just shoot from here from your concealed position."
"Yeah, it's safer to use a gun." He Yuzhu nodded. In fact, he knew that his strength was far beyond that of an ordinary person. Even if he threw a grenade, he might be able to break through the glass. But since there was a safer way, there was no need to take the risk. It was just a bit more troublesome to shoot. There were two people in the driver's cab of each truck. They had to be killed to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
The group immediately followed the plan and quickly retreated to a concealed position about thirty meters away from the road, a position that would both avoid the enemy's line of sight and ensure shooting accuracy.
"Everyone remember, change positions immediately after firing, and do not stay!" Hu Sanxi lowered his voice and repeatedly reminded everyone. At present, their forces were weak, and as long as they fired and exposed their positions, they would inevitably attract concentrated fire from the enemy. Lying together would only lead to their collective death.
Everyone nodded and quickly dispersed, each finding a concealed firing position.
He Yuzhu first picked up the M1 rifle, aimed it at the moving truck, then shook his head and put the M1 rifle away. Although the gun had sufficient firepower, its accuracy and range were insufficient, making it somewhat inadequate for dealing with moving targets at long distances.
He reached behind his back and took out his KR98K sniper rifle, which was equipped with a scope and had a long range and high accuracy, making it perfect for long-range sniping of drivers.
He Yuzhu crouched behind the rock, his eyes focused, locking onto the first target truck through the scope. At the same time, he quickly adjusted the aiming angle according to the wind speed and direction, and calculated the lead time.
With everything ready, he held his breath and steadily pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
A crisp sniper shot rang out, piercing the night sky.
Immediately afterwards, there were two more "click-click" sounds as the bolt was pulled back to chamber a gun, and the second shot rang out instantly.
"Bang!"
After firing two shots, He Yuzhu didn't pause at all. He immediately put away his sniper rifle, turned around, and quickly moved to the side, his movements as swift as the wind.
"Stop! Stop! The truck has stopped!"
"Hit! The pillar really hit the driver!"
The soldiers, hidden in the rear, saw the scene on the highway through the grass and cheered in hushed tones, their eyes filled with admiration.
Only Hu Sanxi frowned, muttering with some doubt, "This gunfire... why does it sound so much like a Zhongzheng rifle? Could it be that after a day of fighting, I've heard too much gunfire and my ears are acting up?"
Without a second thought, he immediately lowered his voice and called out in the direction He Yuzhu had moved, "Zhu Zi! Zhu Zi! Where are you? Are you alright?"
His response was met with two more consecutive sniper shots.
"Bang! Bang!"
As soon as the gunshots rang out, the enemy forces on the highway reacted instantly, with dense belts of bullets, accompanied by flashes of light, sweeping wildly toward their concealed area.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh—puff puff puff!"
The sharp sound of bullets whistling through the air, and the muffled thuds of bullets hitting the ground and grass, were incessant. Without the slightest hesitation, everyone immediately lay down tightly on the ground, pressing their bodies low, not daring to look up for fear of being hit by stray bullets.
Meanwhile, He Yuzhu had already moved to a safer location further away.
Before firing the second shot, he glanced back at the result of the first shot and found that the truck whose driver had been killed was slowly starting to move again. It was clear that enemy soldiers in the truck had climbed into the cab and taken over as driver.
Looking closely behind, there was another truck with a man lying in the cab, and an enemy soldier was operating the vehicle.
He Yuzhu's eyes turned cold, and he decisively fired again, two bullets accurately shooting out and killing both drivers of the two trucks in front and behind.
This time, the two trucks came to a complete stop in the middle of the road, blocking the entire road. The convoy behind them could not pass at all and instantly formed a long queue. The panicked shouts of enemy soldiers and the frantic honking of car horns could be faintly heard, one after another, creating a cacophony. Clearly, the enemy convoy behind them was in complete chaos.
From where He Yuzhu and the others were, their view was obstructed, and they could not see what was happening further away. They could only hear the panicked sounds of the enemy troops on the highway.
Meanwhile, the rear positions remained silent, clearly indicating that they had not yet received orders for a counterattack from the main force.
He Yuzhu moved to a new sniper position. As soon as he set up his gun, he saw through the scope that a military jeep was speeding up from behind the enemy convoy. It braked suddenly next to the stopped truck, and two enemy officers quickly got out of the jeep and ran towards the truck. The jeep did not stop at all and immediately turned around, trying to rush forward and bypass the truck blocking the road.
"Trying to run? I'll make you pay!" He Yuzhu's eyes turned cold. He quickly chambered a round, aimed at the driver's seat of the jeep, and decisively pulled the trigger.
"Bang!"
As soon as the gunshot rang out, the jeep stalled instantly and came to a stop in the middle of the road.
The enemy soldiers on the vehicle scrambled off, crawling haphazardly under the vehicle for cover. But He Yuzhu had already moved to a different position, not wanting to linger. He knew that the enemy's attention was focused on this area, and every second they stayed there was an increase in danger.
After changing his sniping position again, He Yuzhu observed through the scope that the enemy had quickly adjusted their deployment, directly bringing over an armored vehicle to the front of the convoy, which was slowly moving towards his section of the road.
Meanwhile, South Korean soldiers jumped off the trucks behind them, forming a dense mass. They fired their guns and searched the roadside bushes, intending to completely wipe out this small unit.
He Yuzhu remained calm and showed no sign of panic. When the enemy's searchlights came on again, he decisively opened fire, shattering the searchlights once more.
However, the enemy immediately adjusted the truck's front, using the truck's headlights as searchlights to illuminate the roadside bushes. Along with the lights came an even denser barrage of bullets, which swept wildly towards the concealed area.
In order to cover the safe transfer of Hu Sanxi and others, He Yuzhu deliberately attracted enemy fire, constantly changing his shooting position and firing a shot from time to time, making the enemy mistakenly believe that he was alone, and relentlessly tracking his tracks, thus buying his comrades enough time and space to transfer.
Time passed slowly, and before we knew it, it was already around 7:30 in the evening.
Suddenly, the distant gunfire intensified, becoming even more ferocious than before. Then, a deafening roar, like a tsunami, erupted from behind the valley.
"Charge! Kill!"
The shouts were deafening, the morale was high, and the sound echoed throughout the entire battlefield.
He Yuzhu was overjoyed, instantly realizing: the main force had begun its counterattack! This moment had finally arrived!
Upon hearing the deafening battle cries, the enemy troops on the highway were thrown into chaos. They no longer cared about searching for our soldiers by the roadside and scrambled to climb onto the trucks in a panic. Every truck bed was packed with people, and those who couldn't squeeze on clung to the railings. They were completely routed and had no fighting capacity whatsoever.
Just then, He Yuzhu saw seven or eight figures rushing towards the road in the darkness, firing at the enemy as they charged. They were Hu Sanxi's comrades.
Seizing the opportunity presented by the enemy's rout and lack of will to fight back, they launched a decisive attack, intending to seize the chance to annihilate the enemy, capture prisoners, and expand their gains.
Upon seeing this, He Yuzhu immediately slung his M1 rifle over his shoulder, reached into his pocket with his fingertips, and instantly pulled out two MP38 submachine guns with pre-loaded magazines. Holding them in his hands, he propelled himself forward with both feet and charged quickly toward the road.
As He Yuzhu rushed to the edge of the road, he opened fire with his two MP38s, raining bullets down on the enemy. In a short while, both magazines were emptied, and countless South Korean soldiers fell. He didn't even have time to count how many enemies he had killed.
After emptying the magazine, He Yuzhu quickly put away his MP38, pulled out a grenade, pulled the safety pin, and threw it precisely at the cab of a truck that was revving its engine wildly but couldn't move fast due to the traffic jam.
"Splash!"
The grenade smashed the driver's side window and fell into the vehicle instantly, followed by the terrified screams of South Korean soldiers in broken North Korean:
"A grenade! A grenade!"
"Boom!"
A violent explosion rang out instantly, the truck's cab was blown to pieces, parts were scattered all over the ground, the truck suddenly stopped and stalled, and many South Korean soldiers crammed into the truck were thrown off the vehicle by the shock, looking disheveled.
These enemy soldiers had no will to fight. When they saw that the vehicles were completely destroyed, they had no courage to resist anymore. They all took off running and fled in all directions into the fields and valleys beside the road, just to save their lives.
