Chapter 269 I'll Wash It Myself
The director's hand was still raised in mid-air.
He opened his mouth but swallowed back the words that were already on the tip of his tongue: "The salary is negotiable, and the script is available for review."
He has been in this industry for twenty years, and most actors are eager to get exposure in front of him.
This is the first time I've been rejected.
And he refused without hesitation.
He held up the business card, then pulled his hand back slightly, but didn't completely pull it back.
Su Wuli caught a glimpse of his still-undeterred expression after being rejected, and reached out to take the business card.
We have to give the director face, at least not in this situation.
"Thank you, director."
The director watched as Su Wuli tucked the business card into her sleeve, then glanced at Yu Chen standing behind her.
Although I knew it was unlikely, I still clung to a sliver of hope.
He turned around after a moment and picked up the walkie-talkie.
The lighting technician adjusted the lights, and the set became a few degrees brighter.
Su Wuli walked in front of the camera and began rehearsing her lines.
Filming ended at 2 a.m.
The director stood beside the monitor, shifting his gaze from the monitor to follow the tall, black figure as it passed through the gap in the set.
The two walked around the pile of props and turned past the makeshift blue brick wall.
The figure was blocked by the wall, leaving only two shadows cast on the ground by the light.
The shadow moved to the left out of the doorway and disappeared.
The director stared at the empty doorway for a few seconds before finally speaking.
It sounded like talking to oneself, yet also like asking the person next to one of them.
"You make so much money as an actor, how come you're not interested? It's definitely better than being a bodyguard, right?"
He paused for a moment and then said, "It would be a shame if we didn't make movies under these conditions."
He shook his head and couldn't help but sigh.
The assistant director was squatting next to the monitor, bending down to unplug a power cord.
He straightened up when he heard the director's words and wrapped the thread around his arm twice.
He looked up and glanced at the director.
The director was still staring at the doorway.
Unable to resist, she asked, "Director Meng, didn't you see the trending topics last night?"
The director turned around and looked at him.
"What's trending?"
The assistant director smiled and said, "That man isn't a bodyguard; he's Ms. Su's boyfriend."
As soon as he finished speaking, the director looked surprised; he really hadn't expected this.
The assistant director pulled the last wire and said, "Director Meng, I'm leaving now. I have a call to action tomorrow morning."
The director stood alone next to the monitor, looking down at the script in his hand.
After thinking for a moment, I suddenly laughed, with a hint of helplessness in my eyes.
……
The car was quiet on the way back.
Su Wuli turned her head to look at Yu Chen.
He leaned back in his seat with his head slightly tilted back, and his mask was off.
His entire face was exposed.
Su Wuli gazed at his profile, at his high, straight nose.
He seemed slightly lost in thought.
Yu Chen suddenly turned his head to meet her gaze. "What are you looking at?"
"So many people contacted you today," Su Wuli couldn't help but count on her fingers, "Variety shows, filming..."
"Hmm," Yu Chen responded, "It's a bit annoying."
Upon hearing this, Su Wuli burst out laughing.
"So many people want these opportunities," she said. "Those who audition, those with formal training, some who have been running around for years, and some still can't even get a supporting role."
Yu Chen didn't respond, remaining indifferent.
"You're the one who doesn't want anything, yet all the good things keep happening to you," she couldn't help but mutter.
He reached out and took her hand; there was no wind in the car, and her hand was still cold.
He rubbed his hand against the back of her hand.
Su Wuli leaned against Yu Chen's shoulder, her eyelids growing heavier and heavier.
Yu Chen looked down at her.
Her fair face was pressed against his shoulder, her breathing very soft.
The breath exhaled from his nose wafted onto his collar.
He reached out and gently cradled her head, while his other hand slipped under her knees.
He lifted her from the seat and placed her on his lap.
Su Wuli moved slightly, rubbing her face against the crook of his neck to find a comfortable position.
It stopped moving.
Old Chen glanced in the rearview mirror, then raised his hand and adjusted the mirror.
I didn't see anything.
The car had been parked downstairs at the apartment building for quite a while before Yu Chen finally opened the car door.
A cool night breeze blew in.
Su Wuli let out a soft moan and shrank back slightly.
She buried her head in his chest.
But he did not wake up.
Yu Chen carried her out and walked into the building.
Inside the elevator.
Su Wuli, still half-conscious, shifted her position in his arms, moving her face from his chest to the crook of his neck.
She rubbed her lips against his neck and mumbled something.
I couldn't hear what they were saying.
Yu Chen looked down at the top of her head, waiting for her to repeat herself.
She remained silent.
As I stepped out of the elevator, the bright white light from the corridor lights shone down.
Her eyelashes fluttered.
Yu Chen walked to the door, grasped her hand, and pressed his thumb onto the fingerprint lock.
With a "click," the door opened.
He pushed open the door and went inside. The light in the entryway was off, but it didn't affect his vision.
He closed the door, then carried her straight through the hallway into the bedroom.
Yu Chen gently placed the person in his arms on the bed, her long black hair spread out on the pillow.
His movements had created a shallow indentation in the pillow, and her face was nestled in it, half of which was covered by her hair.
Her eyelashes were drooping, and she looked like she was fast asleep.
He stood by the bed, looking down at her.
The person on the bed turned over so their back was to him, pulled the blanket over, and hugged it to their chest.
Yu Chen chuckled softly, then bent down and whispered in her ear.
His voice was very low, "Would you like to take a shower?"
She didn't move after he finished speaking.
Yu Chen waited for a while, thinking she had fallen asleep, and was about to sit up.
Su Wuli mumbled an "Mmm" in her sleep, her voice muffled and unclear under the pillow.
Yu Chen went to the bathroom and filled it with water.
Then he came out, picked her up from the bed, and carried her into the bathroom.
After soaking in warm water, Su Wuli's closed eyes trembled slightly and she opened them.
She was stunned for a while before she came to her senses, her voice still sleepy and soft.
She raised her wet hand and grasped the man's wrist. "I can do it myself."
Yu Chen watched her without moving, and steam drifted between the two of them.
His gaze shifted to her hand holding his wrist, then back to her face.
"Don't worry, I don't need you tonight."
Upon hearing this, Su Wuli paused for a moment.
My cheeks turned pink; I don't know if it was from the steam or something else.
Her fingers loosened from his wrist. "I...I didn't mean that."
Her tongue seemed to be tied in knots, stammering and stuttering.
"No?" he asked back, deliberately raising the pitch at the end of each word.
His gaze moved from her face to the red mark on her collarbone that he had left the night before.
After a pause, the gaze returned to her face.
Seeing this, Su Wuli's face turned even redder.
She completely let go of his wrist and let her hand dangle into the warm water.
She insisted quietly, "...I'll wash it myself."
Anyone who didn't know better would think she had been bullied.
Yu Chen's lips curled up, and then he stood up and left the bathroom.
Su Wuli looked at the closed bathroom door and breathed a sigh of relief.
When I came out of the bathroom after taking a shower, it was almost four in the morning.
I was already tired, but seeing the bed made me even more so.
Yu Chen walked up to her, and Su Wuli didn't say anything. With a hint of dependence, she nestled into his chest and leaned against him.
He raised his large hand and gently rubbed her head.
