A Manual for Surviving a Weird World
Chapter 307 Self-deception
Chapter 307 Self-deception
“Thank you for your care.”
On stand number one, Fusolus raised a glass of ginger ale to Ning Zhe and said with a smile, “I think tonight will be a wonderful night.”
“I think so too.” Ning Zhe ignored Xia Yubing’s stiff expression beside him, raised his hand and clinked glasses with Fusolus, then drank the soda in one gulp.
Suddenly, a male servant came in, drawing aside the curtain. Fusolus was furious, and was about to scold him for being rude, but he saw that the male servant just bowed and whispered a few words to him. Fusolus’s face suddenly changed, and he said hastily, “Sorry, excuse me for a moment.” Then the two of them left the room in a hurry.
“…What happened?” Ning Zhe looked at the swaying curtain at the door with some curiosity, and poured himself a new glass of ginger ale.
Now there were only two of them in the room. Xia Yubing bit her lower lip, tugged at Ning Zhe’s sleeve, and asked, “Why did you buy that girl?”
“You mean Sally Sally?” Ning Zhe took a sip of soda and said calmly, “I’m not interested in this kind of development play, but Van Dyke is very interested. It can be said that I think about her day and night, and count the days on my fingers all day long, waiting for the day when she will be ripe.”
“I know, but.” Xia Yubing’s face was full of worry. She knew that Ning Zhe was imitating Van Dyke’s usual behavior to avoid people around him getting suspicious, but…
“It’s easy to buy her back, but what about after that?” Xia Yubing couldn’t help asking, “How are you going to deal with her? Are you going to…”
“You’re overthinking it. I think it would be easier to kill him.”
Ning Zhe heard the jealousy in her voice, and gently swirled the ginger ale in his glass, saying, “According to Van Dyke’s nature, when a new concubine first gains favor, he will keep her by his side 24 hours a day, and only throw her into the villa when he gets tired of playing with her, and then talk about it later when he feels like it.
But I can’t keep this girl with me every day, and it’s not realistic to keep her somewhere secretly, so it’s better to kill her and put an end to it all. At worst, it can be an accident.”
Ning Zhe did not forget his original intention of leaving Jiuzhou and coming overseas – to keep a low profile and wait for the opportunity quietly in a place where Fenwu could not be influenced. If there was a chance, it would be best to find a way to collect some information about Fenwu, and the rest would be a one-step process.
He was not a lustful European nobleman who would add instability to his life just because he coveted the beauty of a Persian girl. The most cost-effective way to deal with the situation was to kill her directly.
“This……”
Xia Yubing opened her mouth and stared blankly at the indifferent expression on Ning Zhe’s face, as if she was looking at a stranger she met for the first time.
When did he become like this?
No… He has been like this from the beginning, but I have deliberately ignored it before.
This is human nature. Xia Yubing and others would rather believe that their husband is a living person with flesh and blood and emotions, rather than a ghost who is ignorant of human feelings and clumsily imitating what it thinks is a “human”. She always subconsciously ignores the detachment hidden in his gentle words, unwilling to face the inhuman indifference under his warm and gentle appearance.
“… Ning Zhe?”
“how?”
“Are you a human or a ghost?” Xia Yubing bit her lower lip and asked in a low voice as if she had made a great decision.
“What a problem.”
Ning Zhe laughed and said, “Of course I’m a human. I have my favorite food, favorite drinks, favorite books and favorite movies. I have all the emotions and desires that a normal person should have. I’m also lustful like most men. You should be very clear about this.” “Hmm…” Xia Yubing blushed. She didn’t know what she was thinking of. She secretly looked away and didn’t dare to look at him.
“…In short, apart from having more things on my mind, there is no difference between you and me, or anyone else.” Ning Zhe picked up the ginger ale and put the final word on his life. His decisive tone did not sound like he was comforting Xia Yubing, but more like he was trying to convince himself.
Suddenly, a burst of hurried footsteps came from the corridor, and Fusolus opened the curtain and walked in hurriedly, his face serious and anxious: “Fan, I need your help.”
Ning Zhe drank the soda in one gulp and stood up immediately without saying a word: “What’s wrong?”
“The theater is haunted. We must seal off the scene immediately.”
“learn.”
Without a word, Ning Zhe took out a small box wrapped in cloth from his arms. Fusolus took the box and opened it. Inside was a pure black rectangular inkwell with about one third of ink left.
“That’s enough.” Fusolus took the inkstone and turned away.
A waiter came to the door and said to Ning Zhe, “The theater is about to close. Do you want to leave immediately?”
In order to prevent the spread of the strange incident, everyone in the opera house, including the wealthy and noble customers, has been confined and forbidden to leave, but if Van Dyke wants to leave, there is still a convenient door that can be opened for him.
“No need.” Ning Zhe shook his head. He knew what was important and what was not. “What happened here?”
“It’s like this, we just found the body of our VIP Mr. Diesel on the sofa in stand 6.”
The male servant under Fussoulus was obviously professionally trained. He suppressed his fear and said, “Mr. Diesel did not have any wounds on his body. Neither open wounds from sharp cuts nor bruises from blunt blows were found. There were also no obvious signs of poisoning. The theater doctor gave him a simple examination and found nothing suspicious. We initially determined that his death was caused by a strange incident.”
“Is that all?” Ning Zhe frowned and said, “I remember that Diesel. He was over 70 years old and had a very unrestrained private life. It wouldn’t be surprising if he died suddenly one day. It’s just that we can’t find out the exact cause of death for the time being. It shouldn’t be enough to be considered a strange incident, right?”
“You are right.” Fusolus, who had just left, strode back and said, “If it is just this, it certainly won’t happen.”
Ning Zhe took the inkstone and saw that half of the ink was used up.
“I have used ink lines to separate the inside and outside of the opera house. Now no atom can cross the line and move from one side of the line to the other. The ghost is trapped in the theater.” Fusolus said, “If it was still inside when I drew the line.”
“What’s wrong here?” Ning Zhe put the inkstone back into the box and asked.
Fusolus stretched out his arms and made a ‘please’ gesture: “I will take you to see the scene of Diesel’s death first, and we can talk while we walk.”
“Okay.” Ning Zhe followed without any hesitation, and Xia Yubing had no choice but to follow his pace. Two tall and strong male servants followed closely behind.
