Chapter 322 The New Insect of Knowledge
Renekton paused for a moment.
"He seemed to have mentioned feeding the animal some kind of 'root'."
"Roots?" Glock frowned. "What roots?"
Rick frowned and shook his head.
"I'm not sure, but judging from where they went, it should be the pipeline layer. Their goal seems to be that wall."
When Rick said this, he glanced at Lu Yuan, who clearly knew what Rick was implying.
The Grey Covenant called that place "the Root".
Lu Yuan recalled the bronze pillars he had seen in the pipeline layer, and the inscriptions printed by Boren.
If what lies behind the copper wall truly is the "root" of the Bronze City, then what is Gray Contract trying to release, or...?
But Lu Yuan quickly realized something was wrong: if it really was Him, how could Rick see the memories...?
Unless these memories are allowed to be seen. A third-tier chess piece, its memory contains only a single image and a single word, completely clean, as if it had been pre-washed.
Rick continued.
"There's one more thing. The box they brought contains things they got from the Sea of Knowledge."
Glock asked immediately.
"What is it?"
Rick turned around, took a copper box from the corner, and placed it on the table.
The box was small, about the size of a palm, and its surface was covered with dense inscriptions, which were still faintly glowing.
Lu Yuan walked to the table and looked at the box.
"Can you open it?"
Rex nodded and reached out to unlock the inscribed lock on the box.
The box was opened, revealing a layer of grayish-black shredded cloth inside, on which lay a severed limb.
It wasn't large, about the length of an adult's forearm, and was grayish-white in color, like a riverbed that had been dried up for a long time, with dense, fine cracks covering the entire surface.
It also carried a very faint aura that Lu Yuan found familiar.
Grayish-white text jumped out at the edge of my field of vision.
[Detection Target: ? Residual limbs (Knowledge Residue)]
[A limb that has been passed down for an unknown period of time contains rules that have become obsolete; perhaps some knowledge remains if you squeeze it out?]
Upon seeing this, Lu Yuan subconsciously took a small step back.
Glock noticed his movement and moved back as well.
"What's wrong? Is this stuff highly polluting?"
"This thing carries the lingering aura of the Sea of Knowledge; it's best to be careful."
Lu Yuan's voice was very low.
Glock frowned, and Rick leaned over to look at the severed limb. The worms on his arm wriggled, as if they were rejecting something.
Just then, Lu Yuan's left eye suddenly felt hot.
The symbiotic connection is stirring; it was conceived by the worm of knowledge.
Lu Yuan hesitated for a moment, but finally agreed, since it wasn't really a secret.
After obtaining Lu Yuan's consent, the Worm of Knowledge flew out on its own.
The insect flew around the severed limb, its colors constantly shifting.
Upon seeing this, Glock couldn't help but take another step back.
"Lu Yuan, what are you doing?"
Lu Yuan looked at Glock's expression and smiled.
"My pet."
Rick didn't move, but the worms on his arm seemed to sense something and curled up, ceasing to wriggle.
The insect of knowledge landed on the surface of the severed limb, its antennae gently tapping a spot, as if knocking on a door.
Something was wriggling slightly in a dried crack on the surface of the limb.
Lu Yuan held his breath.
A tiny worm slowly crawled out of the crack.
It was less than half the size of a grain of rice, and its entire body was translucent, making it almost invisible in the dim light of the detention room.
It was exactly the same as when Lu Yuan first saw the Insect of Knowledge.
It's a new kind of knowledge-generating insect!
The miniature insect of knowledge stopped at the edge of the crack, its light trembling slightly, clearly showing its fear.
Lu Yuan's knowledge insect moved closer, its antennae lightly touching the small insect, the movement extremely subtle.
The insect's trembling slowed down.
Rick saw this and approached the box.
"A new kind of knowledge-derived worm?"
Rex glanced at the little bug, then at Lu Yuan's left eye. He had seen the one Lu Yuan released during the underground battle, and in his understanding, Lu Yuan was also raising a knowledge-derived bug.
"Luckily I didn't go up there, it would have been troublesome if I had been bitten by one."
Glock frowned when he heard about the Knowledge Derivative Worm; he had obviously heard of it before, but Lu Yuan's was colorful, and Glock didn't recognize it at first.
"How did it end up in something like this?"
"It's not surprising that something from the ocean of knowledge would contain this."
Rex looked at Lu Yuan.
"Can you handle this? If you can, you can take it with you."
In his view, Lu Yuan had derivative insects, making him the most suitable person to deal with such matters.
Lu Yuan summoned the Knowledge Worm back to his left eye, and the little worm shrank back into the crack.
"Okay, I'll take this back and study it."
Rick turned and left.
"There's still some wrap-up work to be done on the interrogation side."
Glock followed Rick out, leaving Lu Yuan alone in the detention cell.
Lu Yuan stood still, waited a few seconds, and confirmed that there were no footsteps outside the door.
He looked back at the box on the table.
The Worm of Knowledge immediately flew out again, this time alone, and its movements were even more urgent. Its antennae pointed at the small worm in the crack, and then at Lu Yuan's left eye.
Lu Yuan perceived the meaning through the symbiotic connection.
This is a companion. It is very small and weak. It has been in the remains for an unknown amount of time. If it weren't for the faint knowledge contained within these remains, it would probably be dead by now.
Right now, it needs knowledge, otherwise it won't survive.
Lu Yuan barely hesitated; he had been hoping for this opportunity. If it weren't for the fact that the previous seashells were difficult to use to catch the Knowledge Bugs, Lu Yuan would have even considered using the entrance to the Tower of Knowledge to catch a few.
"it is good."
He extended his index finger, conveying the will of the contract through the symbiotic connection.
The little insect crawled out of the crack, hesitated for a moment, touched Lu Yuan's fingertip with its antennae, and then crawled up.
The gray and white text danced.
You have gained the trust of the Knowledge Worm, and you have formed a contract with a new Knowledge Worm.
Your connection with the ocean of knowledge seems to have deepened...
The tiny insect burrowed into Lu Yuan's skin and moved along his arm toward his left eye. Soon, a very faint presence appeared deep within his left eye, like a newly lit wick.
Lu Yuan closed the box, showing no outward change, but a question was on his mind.
This severed limb retains traces of knowledge, and contains worms of knowledge. It was brought out from the Sea of Knowledge, and is very likely part of that corpse.
He recalled the thick blood and endless rotting flesh that the students had stepped on beneath the Tower of Learning—it was inside the corpse of that five-headed being.
The Grey Clan wants to send it near the Copper Wall, as Beren has said that the entity behind the Copper Wall is the source of the Bronze City's power. The Grey Clan calls it "The Root."
The Gray Contract Society wants to use the knowledge of the ocean to reach the "roots"?
Lu Yuan's heart sank. After all, there was a deep abyss beneath the Bronze City; if something really went wrong...
Lu Yuan planned to go find Klaus first. In any case, he had to figure out the situation at the pipeline layer first.
Lu Yuan glanced at the two Gray Pact members in the cage. They were already unconscious. Rex's swarming insects had forcibly extracted their memories, clearly causing them almost irreversible damage.
Lu Yuan turned to leave and bumped into Glock.
"Go and report the situation to Klaus. I'll put the box away."
Lu Yuan nodded.
He walked to the door of the medical room and pushed it open.
Klaus lay in bed, his face still ashen, but his breathing had become much more steady. He opened his eyes when he heard the door open.
"How is it?"
Lu Yuan walked to the bedside and briefly explained the situation in the detention room.
Especially the memories that Rick read were just too... coincidental; apart from that giant head, he didn't see anything else.
"It seems the Gray Contract Society got their hands on what flowed from the Sea of Knowledge from there."
Lu Yuan looked at Klaus and continued.
"They want to use this to make contact with the wall that Buren discovered earlier."
Klaus's expression gradually turned serious upon hearing this.
"Are you saying that someone within the Tower of Learning is helping the Gray Pact?"
"Mm." Lu Yuan nodded.
After all, it was truly unbelievable that even a fourth-tier expert like Klaus couldn't stop the leak, so how could the members of the Gray Pact Society have gotten their hands on it?
Unless the Gray Pact members were present, the evidence was intercepted by others at the scene, kept privately, and eventually handed over to members of the Gray Pact.
But the most crucial question here is, why not let the fourth-order go?
The third-tier Gray Pact not only failed to complete its mission, but also lost everything.
Lu Yuan was having a headache; why was Bronze City getting more and more chaotic?
After a brief silence, Klaus finally spoke.
Are you heading to the pipeline level?
"Yes, I want Rek, and preferably a Tier 4 one as well."
Lu Yuan didn't stand on ceremony and immediately asked to take two fourth steps.
"Okay, but be careful. Another person will follow behind. You and Rick can go first."
Klaus picked up a paper and pen and wrote something.
Just then, footsteps sounded outside the door. It was Rex, carrying the potion that the Earl had brought.
"The medicine sent from the Earl's side."
Rick handed the items over.
"I've checked it, there's no problem."
Klaus nodded and placed the potion aside.
"Rex, you and Lu Yuan go to the pipeline again. The night watchmen we assigned there should have searched most of the pipeline by now."
Klaus continued.
"Take this with you."
Klaus reached out and condensed a small piece of green crystal, but unlike what he had seen in the battle, this crystal seemed to contain something.
"This is?"
Rick took it, looked at it, and didn't notice anything special about it.
"I left something inside the bodies of members of the Gray Pact."
A cold glint flashed in Klaus's eyes.
"The price of those three afterimages was not small, but it was worth it to plant this stuff on those rats."
