Chapter 321 Interrogation
Glock's expression changed when he saw Klaus's state, but he clearly knew something as well.
"Lu Yuan, is the deputy chief of staff alright? The logistics doctor is on his way."
"It's nothing," Lu Yuan replied.
The gray text appeared as they ran away carrying Klaus.
There was no suffix at the time, which means that Klaus only had a minor superficial injury this time, apart from being overworked.
"That's good, that's good." Glock rarely showed a look of lingering fear.
"The Gray Contract Society is incredibly audacious!! They must pay the price!!"
Just as Glock was getting furious.
Klaus sat on a chair on the first floor, leaned back and took a few breaths, his expression gradually showing signs of fatigue.
"Explain the situation regarding the pipeline. The members of the Gray Pact Society are all in the inner city, so who was the Tier 4 enemy the pipeline encountered?"
Glock immediately stepped forward and opened the record in his hand.
"Back then, Rick encountered what appeared to be a fourth-tier transcendent being from the Gray Pact Society, but they quickly disappeared. Afterwards, two third-tier members of the Gray Pact Society arrived, carrying a box of items they had retrieved from the Sea of Knowledge. Rick intercepted the items."
He turned a page, his expression grave.
"So there's at least a fourth-tier person lurking in the shadows who could pose a threat to Rick, but the good news is that Rick has captured the two third-tier people alive and can interrogate them."
Klaus closed his eyes, leaned back in his chair without speaking, indicating that Glock should make the arrangements himself.
Glock glanced at him, picked up the communication crystal, and went outside.
Immediately afterwards, the logistics department rushed in, and Klaus was taken to the branch's medical room.
Klaus's afterimages reverted the physical injuries, but the loss of sanity and the damage to the three afterimages could not be resolved by reverting.
He needs some time to recover.
Lu Yuan stood in the corridor outside the medical room, his face solemn. Everything seemed to have come full circle.
Moreover, the Grey Pact also has its trump cards. Not only are there a large number of fourth-tier members, but most importantly, after J left, the defenses of Bronze City seemed to be activated to the greatest extent. You should know that the last time was when the ghouls attacked and the guardians took action.
Does this mean the Grey Contract Society also possesses silver pieces similar to those left by Beren? And can they mobilize Bronze City to some extent? If that's the case, then I'm doomed. They're already unaffected by Bronze City; if they can mobilize it...
Lu Yuan was having a bit of a headache.
The oil lamps in the corridor were dimmed to their lowest setting, the flames reduced to the size of a fingernail, barely casting a small, yellowish glow on the wall. There were significantly more people in the branch than usual, and many unfamiliar faces hurried past in the corridor; they must have been temporarily transferred in as reinforcements.
Several questions had been weighing on his mind, and he hadn't figured any of them out since the battle ended.
What exactly is the goal of the Gray Pact Society?
Based on the previous hints, the Gray Pact group's goal is very clear: the Glazed Water and the Power. So, which one of these two are they looking for in the Bronze City?
To say that there's crystal water is simply a fantasy. Bronze City doesn't produce this stuff; all they have left is power. So where do they get it from? Fourth-tier mutated extraordinary beings and fourth-tier bizarre extraordinary beings—if they want to take the next step, they can only rely on it, right?
There's something even more wrong.
The Gray Contract was fully aware of Klaus's injuries. Everyone present knew about his injuries when he entered the Tower of Knowledge to help deal with the leak from the Sea of Knowledge, but who would want Klaus to die?
Neither the Tower of Learning, the Ascension Society, nor even the Archbishops of the Church would want anything to happen to Klaus. Even the members of the Tower of Learning would never want Klaus to die. Because Bronze City needs him, and the cost of Klaus's death would be unbearable, completely contrary to the Empire's interests.
Surely the people from the Gray Pact Society couldn't have been there? Lu Yuan didn't believe it even more, unless everyone was blind at the time.
Finally, and most importantly, why did they have to kill Klaus?
Lu Yuan didn't know whether the Empire would send anyone once Klaus died, but the Night Watch headquarters would definitely send someone, perhaps even a fifth-tier one. The Gray Contract Society didn't care what plans they had before, as long as a fifth-tier one arrived, they would absolutely crush them all.
Because two Tier 5 beings in Bronze City could absolutely turn everything upside down.
Unless they were planning to do something during the days following Klaus's death...
Lu Yuan felt a sense of unease creeping into his heart.
The sound of a carriage stopping came from outside the door.
Lu Yuan snapped out of his daze and turned to walk towards the lobby on the first floor.
A middle-aged man dressed in the uniform of a servant of the Earl's mansion walked into the branch office with a solemn expression and quick steps. Glock went to greet him, and Lu Yuan also came down the stairs.
The messenger bowed slightly upon seeing Glock.
"The Earl sent me to inquire about the situation of Deputy Chief of Staff Klaus."
Glock's expression relaxed a little.
"The deputy chief of staff is fine, but he has been overworked and needs to rest."
The envoy nodded, his expression still grave.
"The inner city was attacked by the Grey Pact Society; it was utterly lawless, and His Excellency the Earl is deeply angered by it."
He paused for a moment, then took a dark wooden box from his pocket.
"The main hall incident has resulted in the deaths of over a dozen people, and the mess still needs to be cleaned up. Based on the clues, the Earl has located the source of the Dark Green Potion and is investigating further details."
The messenger handed the wooden box to Glock.
"These are a few bottles of special medicine that the Earl specially prepared to help Vice Chief of Staff Klaus recover faster."
Glock took the wooden box; it was heavy.
"Please convey our thanks to the Earl."
Lu Yuan, who was listening nearby, asked a question.
"What countermeasures do the Gray Contract Society have?"
The envoy was silent for two seconds, then shook his head.
"There's no good solution for now."
There was a hint of helplessness in his tone.
"The Gray Pact members come and go without a trace. If it weren't for the guards' intervention last night, the consequences would have been unimaginable."
After saying this, the envoy gave a few more instructions regarding the follow-up arrangements at the Earl's mansion, then turned and left.
The sound of the carriage gradually faded into the distance.
Glock put the medicine box on the table, grumbling.
"Bronze City is such a large city, yet even the Gray Pact Society can't do anything about it!"
His voice was low, but his anger was palpable.
"Just wait until the Gray Contract Society starts their rampage and attacking people, then you'll behave yourself!"
Lu Yuan listened and agreed in his heart.
With the current number of fourth-tier members in the Gray Pact—Ring, 9, and J—they can almost intercept and kill any non-superhuman. Unless you possess fourth-tier strength or are exceptionally fast, if the Gray Pact wants to kill you, you absolutely cannot escape.
Glock continued, his tone sarcastic.
"But I hope the Earl is wise. If this matter is handled well, the Empire will not only not blame you, but will even mobilize more extraordinary experts to come."
He looked at Lu Yuan with a mocking expression.
"Because of the Tower of Learning."
Lu Yuan understood what Glock was mocking about.
The Empire needs the stability of the Bronze City and the continuation of the quest to explore the Sea of Knowledge. No one can stand in its way; all obstacles must be overcome.
This is the Earl's bargaining chip.
Glock dropped his mocking expression and turned to Lu Yuan.
"Interrogate the Gray Pact members immediately. Lu Yuan, you and Lei Ke go together. See if you can find anything out."
He paused for a moment.
"If we don't tell him, Rick will get useful information."
Lu Yuan nodded, understanding in his heart, and at the same time, he wanted to see how exactly they managed to extract information from the mind.
The two walked down the stairs to the lowest level of the branch.
The corridor was dimly lit, with only the inscriptions embedded in the walls glowing faintly. Lu Yuan's footsteps echoed on the stone slabs, with Glock walking ahead in silence.
The questions were still swirling in Lu Yuan's mind.
The fact that the Gray Contracts knew so much about Klaus's injuries suggests there's a mole within their ranks. But who is this mole? Not many people know about Klaus's injuries, so the pool of suspects should be narrowed down.
Thinking of this, Lu Yuan felt even more uneasy. If the Ascension Society and the Gray Contract Society were truly cooperating, then it would be a very bad situation.
At the end of the corridor, the iron door to the detention cell came into view. Glock pushed the door open, revealing a dimly lit room where Rick stood expressionless in the corner.
The two third-tier members of the Gray Pact were locked in two separate iron cages, their hands and feet bound by specially made shackles engraved with inscriptions that glowed faintly.
Lu Yuan walked in, and gray-white text jumped out at the edge of his vision.
[Detection Target: Gray Pact members (extraordinary believers) (contamination)]
[A corrupted human being, whose very foundation has been eroded by the power of crystal, a loser with no hope for the future.]
Lu Yuan frowned slightly upon seeing this. What?
Are the believers extraordinary?
He then looked at the person in the other cage.
[Detection Target: Gray Pact members (extraordinary believers) (contamination)]
[A corrupted human being, whose very foundation has been eroded by the power of crystal, a loser with no hope for the future.]
Both of them were devout believers, and both were corrupted.
Lu Yuan stood in front of the cage without speaking. He was thinking about a question: Why were the members of the Gray Pact Society corrupted?
Glock walked up to the cage, his tone icy.
"It's best to confess what you know, to avoid suffering."
The person in the cage did not answer, but only looked up at Glock. There was no fear or anger in his eyes, only a calmness.
That calmness made Lu Yuan feel uneasy.
Glock asked a few more questions, but the person in the cage remained silent.
Rick stepped out from the corner, his voice low.
"They won't tell me. I've asked them everything I needed to."
Rex looked at the two people in front of him, a cold glint in his eyes.
"I directly access their memories."
Glock nodded immediately.
"We'll do anything to get the information, no matter if they live or die."
Rick walked to the cage, raised his right hand, and a crack appeared in his palm. A thin worm crawled out of the crack, its body glowing with a dark red light.
The person in the cage saw the insect, and their expression finally changed; they shrank back slightly.
But the shackles were fastened very tightly, and he couldn't retreat very far.
The insect crawled onto his forehead and burrowed into his skin.
The person in the cage suddenly stiffened, his mouth opened, but he couldn't make a sound. A few seconds later, the insect crawled out of his forehead and back into Rick's palm.
Rick closed his eyes and remained silent for a few seconds.
Then he opened his eyes and looked at Lu Yuan and Glock.
"They saw a huge head."
Lu Yuan's heart skipped a beat. Did He really exist?
"What head?"
Rick's voice carried a hint of doubt.
"I couldn't see clearly. I only have one image in my memory: a huge head, suspended in mid-air, surrounded by darkness. The head was speaking, but I couldn't hear what it was saying."
