Chapter 162 Evil Spirits?

Chen Mo stepped on the gas, and the black Ford slowly drove out onto the street in the early morning.

Zhou Nian was as stiff as a wooden stick, her hands gripping the edge of the seat tightly, her eyes wide open, staring unblinkingly at the road ahead.

"Relax, it's not like it's your first time riding in a car."

"I...this is my first time!" Zhou Nian's voice trembled. "Brother Chen, drive slowly, drive slowly..."

Chen Mo ignored her and instead gently pressed the accelerator.

As the vehicle picked up speed, shops, pedestrians, and rickshaws on the street rushed past.

Zhou Nian cried out "Ouch!" and leaned back, but her eyes gradually brightened.

"Brother Chen...this thing runs really fast!"

"Nonsense, it has four wheels."

"It's much faster than a horse-drawn carriage!" Zhou Nian peered out the window, the wind whipping her hair into a mess. "Look, look! We've overtaken that cyclist! He's still pedaling, hehe!"

Chen Mo glanced at her and a slight smile played on his lips.

The car turned off Liuye Lane onto the Haihe Riverbank and drove along the river embankment for a while.

The autumn sun shines on the river, making it sparkle, and several small boats are swaying gently on the water.

Zhou Nian stuck half her head out of the car window, her eyes squinting from the wind, but she was reluctant to pull it back in.

"Brother Chen, how fast can this car go?"

"I don't know, this road isn't going to be fast."

"Can it be driven all the way to Beiping?"

"...You think this is a train?"

Zhou Nian pulled her head back, chuckled twice, leaned back in her chair, and finally loosened her grip on the edge of the seat.

She looked down and touched the leather seat beneath her, then touched the door handle, as if touching something rare.

"Brother Chen, this car is really nice."

Chen Mo didn't reply, but just accelerated a bit more.

After circling twice, the car returned to the entrance of Liuye Alley.

Zhou Nian pushed open the car door, her feet touched the ground, and she swayed slightly before she could steady herself by holding onto the car door.

She blinked, looked at the ground beneath her feet, then at Chen Mo in the car, her face full of confusion.

"Brother Chen... why is the ground still shaking?"

Chen Mo couldn't help but laugh, "What are you swaying about? You're just carsick."

"Motion sickness?" Zhou Nian held onto the carriage door, then shook her head. "But I never get motion sickness in carriages..."

"Can a horse-drawn carriage be compared to a car?"

Chen Mo turned off the engine, leaned over and closed the car door. "Alright, you can go back now, I have to go to work."

Zhou Nian stood by the roadside, watching the black Ford start up and slowly drive away.

She waved blankly until the car turned the corner and disappeared from sight, then she lowered her arm.

After taking a couple of steps, my feet still felt a little unsteady, like I was walking on cotton.

She shook her head again, muttered something under her breath, and slowly walked towards Willow Leaf Alley.

After walking a dozen steps, he suddenly remembered something and looked back.

The street corner was deserted, except for one rickshaw carrying passengers.

Zhou Nian chuckled twice and walked towards Old Zhao's stall.

"Let me tell you, Mr. Chen's car is so comfortable to ride in..."

------

The black Ford had just turned into the police station's yard when the engine of the black sedan next to it stopped.

The car door opened, revealing Liu Ruyan's aloof face.

The passenger door was also pushed open, and Fang Yingxia leaned out halfway, only to see Chen Mo getting out of the Ford.

"Oh my goodness—"

She paused for a moment, then quickly walked around Ford, circled him halfway, and looked Chen Mo up and down, clicking her tongue twice.

"You're getting better!"

Chen Mo turned off the engine and put the car keys in his pocket: "What, can't I get better?"

"Amazing! Amazing!" Fang Yingxia clicked her tongue twice, bringing her face closer, her eyes gleaming with gossip. "Tell me honestly, did you get some lucrative job and make some extra money?"

Chen Mo was amused by her: "Really, no, this car is second-hand, it's cheap."

"Secondhand?" Fang Yingxia rolled her eyes, recalling the shiny black paint, and pouted, "Are you kidding me? This condition is secondhand? Oh well, never mind, you're all better now anyway."

"By the way, I have a strange incident. I'll report it to Director Zhou later. You guys come with me."

As soon as Fang Yingxia said this, Chen Mo and Liu Ruyan both looked at her.

"What's wrong?" Liu Ruyan asked.

Fang Yingxia looked around and lowered her voice: "Over at Hongqiao, a strange thing happened to a family. The man fell into the sea last month, and they searched for him for three days without success. But a few days ago, he came back on his own."

Chen Mo paused, wondering if it sounded like the same thing as Old Liu's.

"I heard he could walk, move, talk, and eat. But after he came back, he became increasingly strange. He had a fishy smell on him and didn't dare to go out during the day, so he just hid inside."

She looked around and lowered her voice even further: "His wife was so scared that she ran back to her parents' house. Yesterday, her neighbor came to the police station and said that the thing wasn't human at all."

Liu Ruyan frowned slightly: "Are you sure it's abnormal?"

"Yesterday afternoon, Director Zhou asked me to go and check on things first." Fang Yingxia pouted. "With neither of you around, how could I dare to go alone?"

Chen Mo didn't reply, but just looked up at the sky.

The bright autumn sun shone on the gray brick walls of the inspection bureau.

It turns out that Fang Yingxia was talking about the same thing.

"What's wrong?" Fang Yingxia noticed his unusual expression. "You know about this?"

Chen Mo nodded: "The father-in-law of that family came to see me yesterday."

"Looking for you?" Fang Yingxia's eyes lit up. "That's perfect! Let's go together, so I don't get scared."

"I'm going to report to Director Zhou. You two wait for me a moment."

She jogged into the office building, leaving Chen Mo and Liu Ruyan standing in the courtyard.

The sunlight fell on the two of them, casting long shadows.

Liu Ruyan suddenly spoke up: "You mean it's an evil spirit? Or a water ghost?"

"I don't know either." Chen Mo shook his head. "I haven't seen him in person, so I'm not entirely sure."

As they were talking, Fang Yingxia came running over. "Director Zhou approved it! Let's go!"

Chen Mo turned and walked towards the Ford, but after taking a couple of steps, he stopped and looked at Liu Ruyan: "Are you driving or riding in my car?"

Fang Yingxia eagerly replied, "Let's ride in your car! Let us ride in the new car too!"

Liu Ruyan didn't say anything, but walked towards Chen Mo's car and opened the back door.

Fang Yingxia chuckled and slipped into the other side.

He started the car, and the black Ford slowly drove out of the police station's compound.

Liu Ruyan leaned back in her seat, gazing out the window, lost in thought.

Fang Yingxia clung to the car window, muttering incessantly, "Chen Mo, your car is really nice, even newer than Yan's."

"When I make money, I'll buy one and drive it..."

Chen Mo interrupted her: "Where is that family?"

"Over there at Hongqiao, two streets past Liuye Lane," Fang Yingxia said. "Do you know the way?"

Chen Mo didn't answer, but simply turned the steering wheel and the car onto the main road.

Of course he knew; he had just passed by that morning.
